Draping the Exercise Machines

A good thing in China is its exercise consciousness. We have all seen pictures of large groups of people doing tai chi and groups of Chinese school children exercising. Every morning there is an exercise session in all the schools in China. In class there is also an eye exercise session. All over Chinese cities there are groups of simple exercise machines provided for the people. Usually the ones who use them are old people and children. Children love the play value and elderly Chinese people are often very conscientious about exercise.

This is still China, though, and people’s behaviour still surprises me often! There is a definite, Me First, attitude here and it is common to see behaviour that could not happen if someone had only stopped to think of the impact on others before acting. Sometimes it is downright dangerous but often it is just inconvenient. Often I have to laugh. I went out for lunch today and walked past the exercise area and laughed when I saw someone’s winter blankets and quilts draped over the exercise equipment. Let’s hope no one had a daily routine going. Usually everyone is too polite to make a neighbour lose face by complaining, so this type of thing will continue for a few decades longer.
